Legacy, a Tribute to Art Teachers,” featuring a painting by Raphael Beck (1858 – 1947), best known in Western New York for his “Opening of the Erie Canal,” works by Sister Mary Julia (1887 – 1975) of the Sisters of Saint Mary of Namur, Joseph Whalen, William Storrs and several other prominent names in the Western New York art world.
“The idea for the show came out of discussions for another show,” says Joseph Buczkowski, Executive Director of the art center. “People were talking about the art teachers who had the most influence on them. Some of those teachers are members of the art center and they named Sister Mary Julia as one of their most influential instructors. When it was discovered she had been a student of Raphael Beck the whole idea quickly came together.”
An original Beck painting from a private collection will be on loan for the show and works by Sister Mary Julia have been loaned by the Saint Mary Center in Buffalo. “I envision this as a pyramid,” continued Buczkowski, “with Beck at the top, followed by Sister Mary Julia, followed in turn by those she taught and so on. It really is a legacy of talent, inspiration and dedication to excellence.” Although Beck is at the top of the pyramid, Sister Mary Julia, is more the focus of the show. “Many of her students, myself included,” says Buczkowski, “are still alive and so she remains in living memory. It is our hope that this show will demonstrate how far and wide her influence has spread.” |
