I insist April 10, 2010 to May 8, 2010
In the Third Gallery is “I insist,” paintings and drawing by Jolene Beckman. Jolene is receiving her Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Buffalo this spring. She has had solo exhibitions in Batavia, Rochester, and Canandaigua and has been part of group exhibitions in New York, Chicago and Seattle. “I have begun examining structures of power and privilege by interrogating my supposed influence over others that lies within my status as white, middle class, ‘feminine,’ and educated. I have thus chosen to utilize imagery of myself in staged gestures such as offering a chocolate or holding a parasol, to question seemingly benign personal practices that on a greater level affirm my role in the hierarchical order of society. My body is depicted from a low vantage point to create a looming, dominate, presence. This perspective examines ways in which I am responsible for oppressing others without even realizing it. By using my own image I have consciously stepped away from representing others in my work in order to challenge my method of image choosing and to present myself, not others, to the scrutiny of the audience.” Opening Reception was Saturday, April 10 from 5pm to 8pm | ||
