Celebrating Women Exhibition and Events
Downstairs & Upstairs Gallery
July 24, 2010 to August 28, 2010
In both the Downstairs Gallery and the Upstairs Gallery - “Celebrating Women: works by seven Western New York female artists on women centered themes.”
Jennifer Kursten, a board member of the art center came up with the idea while visiting Seneca Falls, the central New York village that played a prominent role in the early women's rights movement. “I was inspired by the women who had the vision and the bravery to push the suffrage movement forward and establish the first women’s rights convention,” says Jennifer. What started out as a personal research project soon turned into a quest to commemorate the ninetieth anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment with an exhibition, a lecture, and other events. “As things got going,” continues Kursten, “more and more people became interested. Before I knew it what had started as a single exhibition had grown into a month long series of events with cooperation from the YWCA, the Dale Association, Murphy’s Orchards and a grant from the Arts Niagara Decentralization Program. Its’ been a lot of hard work but also a lot of fun and very educational.”

The public was invited to the opening reception during which they were able to meet and talk with Belva Lockwood as portrayed by historical re-enactor Edna Stubbs. Lockwood, who was born in Royalton and lived for a time in Lockport (where she headed the Union School District), overcame many gender related obstacles to become an attorney, politician, educator and author. Amongst her accomplishments she was one of the first women lawyers, the first woman to argue a case before the Supreme Court and the first woman to run for President of the United States in 1884.
